Site Brief Presentation

For the final model my group and i decided on modelling our area in the Valve Source engine as well as having a video presentation to show the process of getting to this final stage and the work put into it. Due to certain limitations regarding our firewall (on University internet) and the tools required to both model and map in the Source Engine we had to in the end take a slight step back and use the Half life 1 engine and map creator tool called WorldCraft. Basically the older version of the Engine we wanted to use,however it would still fit the purpose. After a few mini disasters involving rendering of the map and videos which pushed up back even further this is what we ended up with. We were at a stage far further forward but unfortunaetly the machines we were using then decided to give up on us.

Today i made my first attempt at drawing around the University campus using GPS on a tracking device,the device tracks your movement, and places the points at set intervals into a database which you can then, using the outputted file visualize in many different ways or share it with others. To view the visualization i uploaded my file to http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/

It was meant to be….

so not quite there…but theres a slight resemblance

Hertzian Space: Cuba

This is the mapped out Wi-Fi signal from the Cuba bar. I Mapped it using my laptop on a Windows partition and the use of NetStumbler . I Connected to the network and just walked away in differing directions each time until the connection was lost.

The red overlayed area shows where the signal could be recieved and where we could not recieve it. The source is the building to the right of the blue container where the dark blue car is parked outside.

Location Data Collection

Last night we began data collection for our Specific Site Brief at the spot chosen,the paved open area next to the Civic Center and on Royal Parade. Instead however of doing the whole area we decided to use the 4 lamposts that form a square within the area and use that square as our specific space collecting as much unseen data as we could from that space.

To gather our data we equipped an iPhone with a wireless network application and used a normal Sony Ericsson mobile phone for Bluetooth.

With this in mind we took photography from each of the lamposts looking into our space.

We also decided it would a good idea to collect our data from each one of the lamposts.

Creating a Cast

After looking carefully through photographs from the second picnic my group had and talking to the others i decided to make a cast of the underside of my hand. My reasoning for this is that my hands were never not busy during the picnic and i generally had something in the palm of my hand at all times. To create it i purchased some DAS hardening clay from an arts and crafts store before producing the cast where i wanted to.

Choosing a Location

Todays task for IDAT101 was to choose a final location for our Site specific brief and after much deliberation my group and i eventually decided on the Civic Center/Royal Parade.

We thought this would be a suitable location for the project for a number of reasons.

Its a busy open public area with plenty of people travelling through it along the pavement by the road to work or shops,or people heading up to the Hoe.
Its also used by plenty of people specifically skateboarders whose movement and how they affect others movement could be an interesting aspect to look at.
We believe theres a large amount of communications networks coverage over the area.
Its an open area so architecture wont distract us from focusing on whats hidden and not visually obvious as the project demands.
